Description
A large shrub from the Himalayas growing to 4m (13 ft) high. The outer pinkish-red husks (pods) are peppery and can be used as a spice and pepper substitute (as in China) as well as leaves and immature fruit which make a fantastic garnish or flavoured oil.
Please note: there seems to be a debate as to whether this species is dioecious or self-fertile. We have Z.alatum and Z.schinifolium (both with debated self-fertility) planted within 10m of each other and both crop heavily every year. These plants are seedlings of said tree, so to avoid disappointment we would recommend purchasing more than one.
