Compass Plant

Upright herbaceous perennial growing 2-3m high, with towering stalks of yellow sunflower-like blooms in summer and autumn. Compass Plants were named after their ability to align their foliage North-South in order to present the minimum surface area when the sun is highest in the sky!

One of the very best attractors of beneficial insects like hoverflies which will eat your aphid pests. The high-protein, oil-rich seeds are a crucial late-season food source for goldfinches and other wild birds. Its deep root systems structurally bind the earth to prevent erosion while channeling atmospheric carbon deep into the subsoil.

Thrives best in deep, fertile, loamy soils, but easily adapts to sand, gravel, and heavy clay. It requires deep soil depth to accommodate its gargantuan taproot—which can bore up to 3 to 4.5 metres deep— and makes mature specimens completely impervious to severe drought.
