Lavallee's Hawthorn

A small, robust hawthorn tree with a dense network of branches forming a rounded canopy up to 6m (20ft) in height. The glossy green leaves are the perfect backdrop to the abundance of lovely white blossom in May and also last well into winter when they darken and contrast with the orange-red berries. These berries often last until the spring. This is a similar tree to Crataegus crus-galli but has far fewer thorns and the leaves stay on longer. will tolerate exposure such as high altitudes and coastal locations. Soil type is not important as long as there is good drainage. It is a good choice as a screening tree for the summer and autumn. It is a hybrid between the Frosted Thorn, Crataegus crus-galli, and a Mexican species called Crataegus stipulacea.
