Description
Relative of annual (grain) rye, which lives 2-8 years (the longer in less fertile soils). Gives reliable grain yields every year. Our seed originates from an American breeding programme.
The plant sends up slender, elegant flower spikes reaching up to 1.2 metres tall, with seeds rapidly ripening and turning golden by late August or September.
It is incredibly unfussy about soil quality, growing happily in light sand, medium loam, or heavy clay. It prefers a well-drained soil environment; while it is highly drought-tolerant, its roots do best with consistent, moderate moisture.
