Description

Perennial from Europe and Asia, growing to 45cm high, is a highly ornamental, clump-forming herbaceous perennial famous for its rosettes of bright lime-green leaves mapped with striking, blood-red veins.

The young leaves make a good cooked vegetable and can be added raw to salads. The roots are used medicinally. A good mineral accumulator.

It naturally blankets damp, shaded environments, including deciduous woodlands, riverbanks, marsh edges, ditches, and moist waste grounds. It is heavily utilized as a marginal pond plant or bog garden staple. It will tolerate brief dry spells but will quickly go to seed if left dry.
