Whitebeam

A medium tree from Europe, growing 12 m high (6 m in 10 years). Produces masses of fruits which are edible if bletted, frosted or cooked; the fruits are also used medicinally and are a crucial source of food for birds. Young flower buds can be used as a sweet almond flavouring.

A bee and hedging plant, the timber of which is valued for turnery, carving and tool handles. 

Highly wind-tolerant, drought-resistant once established, and copes exceptionally well with urban air pollution. Likes a neutral or alkaline soil and sun or part shade.
