Description
A dense, low growing, creeping evergreen shrub from Eastern North American woodlands growing 12 cm high. Has leathery, glossy green leaves and pinky white flowers in summer. In autumn, it offers vibrant scarlet berries from September onwards and rich bronze-red foliage.
All parts are wintergreen flavoured (think candycanes and toothpaste) and medicinal, containing aspirin-type compounds.
Bees love the flowers. Likes acid soil, shade and tolerates dry conditions once established.
