Description
A small tree from Southeastern USA, growing to 10m or more high.
A yellow dye is obtained from the valuable heartwood (hence the name). It produces pendent, fragrant white, wisteria-like panicles in early summer. Flowering is, however, often sporadic, irregular, or in alternate years, requiring a long, hot summer to bloom well. Bees love the flowers.
Prefers a location sheltered from strong winds to protect its brittle wood
