Apple 'Choux'
Description
Dual purpose apple. Pollination Group 5 or 6 / Group F. Originating in Central France, specifically the Loiret and Loir-et-Cher departments. A localized, very ancient variant of the traditional "Locard" apple family. Because it is a rare heirloom, it is typically preserved by historic French fruit conservatories and specialized heritage nurseries. Medium-sized fruits that are noticeably rounded and flattened (oblate) at the top and bottom. The skin develops a muted yellow background, subtly marked by green vertical striping or flecks. he flesh is greenish-white, exceptionally juicy, and tender. It strikes a sharp balance, being moderately acidic with a low natural sugar profile, lending it a clean, refreshing, and deeply savory/fruity taste. Its high juiciness makes it excellent for regional French apple juices, but its sharp bite and tender flesh mean it cooks down beautifully into pies, tarts, and open-faced French compotes. A fantastic keeper. Harvested in late autumn, it stores incredibly well through the winter, keeping its structure and flavor from December through to January or February.
