Hackberry

Tree from North America, growing to 18 m (60 ft) high. It bears sweet edible fruits and seeds. The roots furnish a dye, and the timber is used for furniture making etc. Also used in shelterbelts.

Virtually unparalleled soil adaptability. It thrives in rich loams, heavy compacted clay, coarse sand, gravel, and highly alkaline soils. It is heavily utilized in cities because it handles poor, nutrient-depleted, and heavily disturbed soils with ease.

Prefers moist, well-drained conditions but is fiercely drought-tolerant once its deep, widespread root system settles. It can also survive temporary seasonal flooding and tolerates wind, ice storms, and heavy air pollution.
