Description

A dramatic, large, hardy herbaceous perennial growing up to 2.5m tall. Known for deeply cut, jagged, red-purple young leaves that mature to deep green, it produces tall panicles of pink or white flowers in summer. It thrives in moist, humus-rich soil in full sun or partial shade, ideal for architectural planting.

Stalks are edible, with tender, acid-flavoured leaf stalks that are often considered superior in flavour to common garden rhubarb. The stalks can be used in pies and jams, and the plant has strong medicinal laxative properties.
