Its profound root systems are deployed to prevent soil erosion along embankments, improve soil structure, and naturally extract heavy metal contaminants from polluted industrial lands.

It naturally prefers moist, damp soils but has deep-penetrating taproots that make mature stands highly drought-resistant during hot summer spells.
